Why should artificial grass be infilled with sand?

By infilling artificial grass with infill sand, the lawn is provided with more stability, preventing it from being easily moved or displaced. By fencing and anchoring the artificial grass with ground anchors, you ensure that the lawn remains firmly in place.

The sand also supports the fibers, making them less likely to lie flat and giving the lawn a more attractive appearance. This way, the artificial grass retains its natural look and remains in good condition even with heavy usage.

How much infill sand do I need?

We recommend infilling artificial grass with round grains (silica sand) ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm in size. The amount of sand needed varies depending on the type of grass, between 6 and 10 kg per square meter of artificial grass.

For shorter grasses with a maximum height of 35 mm, it is recommended to use 6 to 8 kg per square meter.
For taller artificial grass varieties, starting from 35 mm, it is recommended to use 8 to 10 kg per square meter.

By using these recommended quantities of sand, you ensure good support and stability for the artificial grass, contributing to a beautiful and long-lasting lawn.

How does infilling artificial grass with sand work?

Preparation
Make sure the surface of the artificial grass is clean, dry, and level before you start the infilling process. Remove any dirt, dust, and obstacles from the surface, if necessary.

Grain size and quantity
Choose silica infill sand with a recommended grain size of approximately 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm. Depending on the type of artificial grass and the height of the fibers, the required amount of sand varies between 6 and 10 kg per square meter.

Evenly distribute
Evenly distribute the sand over the artificial grass. You can use a spreader or manually spread the sandbags over the lawn. First, brush the fibers upright with a broom or brush machine to ensure the sand is well distributed between the fibers. Be careful not to create sand piles, as they can be difficult to remove.

After the sand has been evenly distributed on the surface, use a stiff-bristle broom or a brush machine to brush the sand further into the artificial grass. This helps to distribute the sand evenly and ensure that it penetrates well and deeply between the fibers.

It also supports the artificial grass fibers, reducing the likelihood of them lying flat and extending the lifespan of the lawn. Don’t worry, the sand is not visible as the sand grains fall between the blades of grass.
